Rust & AI Weekly #6: the foundations move
Welcome back to Rust & AI Weekly, the curated, vetted sweep of crates and tools showing up where Rust meets AI. Today's issue: Syn ships its first major in three years, SeaORM 2.0 goes stable after 43 release candidates, and a Claude SDK that can't panic. The theme this week is load-bearing releases: two crates that sit under enormous swaths of the ecosystem both cut majors within days of each other, and the interesting question in both cases is not "what's new" but "how do you schedule the move without your dependency tree splitting in half".

Pick of the week
syn 3.0 — David Tolnay shipped the first major of the ecosystem's Rust-source parser in three years, and if you maintain anything with a derive macro, this release is on your calendar whether you put it there or not: syn sits under serde_derive, thiserror, async-trait, and most of the proc-macro ecosystem. The headline design move is ten new non-exhaustive *Modifiers structs threaded through the syntax tree, each defaulting to empty and each offering a require_empty() rejection hook. That is Tolnay reserving parking spaces for roughly forty in-flight language RFCs (const traits, never patterns, view types, and friends) so the next wave of Rust syntax lands in minor releases instead of forcing syn 4.0. The leadership read: the syn 1-to-2 transition left the ecosystem carrying duplicate syn builds for years, and the way to avoid replaying that is to treat this as a scheduled migration, not an ambient one. Tolnay is still cutting parallel 2.x releases (2.0.119 landed the week 3.0 did), so there is no forced march; there is, however, a compile-time bill for every duplicated major in your tree. SeaORM 2.0 — Chris Tsang and the SeaQL team called 2.0 stable after 43 release candidates, and Rust Bytes led with the news this morning, so here is the verdict to go with it. The release earns its "largest in project history" label: a dense entity format where relations live on the model as typed fields (HasMany, BelongsTo with nullability encoded in the type), an entity-first workflow that syncs your schema from hand-written entities, nested ActiveModel saves that resolve foreign-key order for you, and typed COLUMN constants that turn mismatched filter values into compile errors. There is also a synchronous API for embedded contexts and Arrow/Parquet export for the analytics crowd. The adoption math is friendlier than most majors: the 1.0 API still works in 2.0, so you upgrade the dependency now and migrate entity formats at your own pace. With 22M+ downloads and 278 contributors, the stewardship line is not the risk; the brand-new surfaces are, and they deserve a probation quarter.

crimson-crab — a Claude-only Rust SDK built around one hard guarantee: unwrap, expect, panic!, and todo! are denied at compile time across the whole library and enforced in CI, so a malformed response is always an Error you handle rather than a panic in an async task. The rest of the design keeps that promise company: every wire enum carries an Unknown catch-all that round-trips unrecognized JSON verbatim (new models work the day they ship), the public API exposes futures_core::Stream rather than tokio types so it compiles for wasm32 unchanged, and the 0.2.0 release added schemars-derived typed schemas so structured output and tool schemas come from your Rust types. The author, publishing as singhpratech, is refreshingly direct about positioning: if you build against several model vendors, rig and genai serve you better; this is for teams that chose Claude and want the entire surface. Brand new and solo-maintained, so the rubric says wait, but the engineering discipline on display says watch closely.

flodl 0.7.0 — the Rust distributed-training project that pools mismatched GPUs (a 5060 Ti on one host, two GTX 1060s in a VM on the other, one behind a PCIe x1 riser) keeps its DiLoCo cohort beating the fastest single card on both wall time and accuracy, now with seeded, reproducible numbers. The release adds a recursive dashboard portal (cohort, host, and rank all render as the same view, exportable as one self-contained HTML file), but the reason it earns ink here is the write-up: the author documents five of the project's own instruments that were measuring the wrong thing, including a seed that never reached model initialization, which quietly invalidated the previous benchmark report. They re-ran the entire sweep and published the corrections. The project describes itself as "human direction, AI implementation", and it is currently producing more honest engineering communication than most funded teams.

- C-variadic function definitions were stabilized — merged this week after years in the pipeline; FFI-heavy codebases can drop a longstanding nightly dependency, and the naked-functions variant entered final comment period right behind it.
- Wasm proc-macro support entered final comment period as a compiler MCP this week — sandboxed, deterministic macro expansion, and a tidy companion story to this issue's lead: the syn under your derives may someday run in a wasm sandbox.
- rustdoc got ~16% faster across doc benchmarks in a single week of merged PRs, per the perf triage of Jul 27 — three inlining and impl-synthesis fixes, no configuration required on your side.
- Cargo
hints.min-opt-levelis in final comment period — an RFC letting crates hint that they should be optimized even in debug builds; if you maintain a hot-path crate that users profile in dev mode, this one is for you.

Elsewhere
- Go-land's vector database Milvus shipped 3.0 with lake-native vector search, via Golang Weekly. The Rust seats at that table are already on this radar: qdrant has held Adopt since issue #1, and lancedb's Rust-core Lance format is the closest analog to Milvus's lake-native pitch. Vector search is one category where Rust is not chasing anyone.
- Alan Donovan published the umbrella proposal for generic collections in Go 1.28: a canonical set type, ordered maps, custom hashers. Sixteen years in, Go is speccing what
std::collectionsshipped on day one. The wry read for Rust folks is also the humble one: Go is doing it with a working group and a migration plan, which is exactly the discipline this issue's syn and SeaORM stories are about. - Kaan Barmore-Genc released webp-go-pure, a pure-Go WebP encoder and decoder for teams that want to drop cgo and libwebp. As far as I can tell, Rust has no complete answer here: image-rs decodes WebP natively and encodes lossless, but lossy WebP encoding still routes through libwebp bindings. That is a genuine gap with a supply-chain angle, and it is a well-shaped project for someone reading this.
A thought for the week
Your dependency tree has load-bearing walls, and this fortnight two of them moved. The failure mode with a foundational major is rarely the migration itself; it is the unmanaged middle, the year where half your dependencies parse with syn 2 and half with syn 3, and you pay for both on every build without anyone having decided to. The syn 1-to-2 era taught that lesson at ecosystem scale. The fix costs one line in a planning doc: treat majors of foundational crates as scheduled work with an owner and a quarter attached, the way you would treat a database upgrade. Crates like syn and SeaORM did their part this month by keeping the old track alive; the calendar half of the migration is yours.
Before I go
The quote of the fortnight comes from Josh Liebow-Feeser on Fuchsia's Netstack3: a network stack written in Rust, dogfooded for 11 months on about 60 devices running nearly around the clock, and the team found three bugs in the field. Any other netstack, he notes, would have produced a mountain. Memory safety keeps buying receipts.
